Brighton High School Pom Squad Clinches National Championship
The Brighton High School Pom Pon squad traveled to Orlando, Florida this past weekend and secured the National Championship trophy.
The Dance Team Union Nationals attracts teams from all over the country to compete. The bulldogs attended last year finishing in 4th place. However this year, they surged ahead to claim victory.
The Bulldogs Varsity squad has 15 members, all of whom traveled to Orlando and competed in the Large Varsity – Team Performance and the Large Varsity – Pom Category. They clinched 1st place in the Team Performance and 2nd in the Pom Category, with a combined score of 176.08.
Head Coach Kendall Gessler expressed her pride, stating to WHMI 93.5 Local News, “We are so proud of these student athletes and the fight and determination they showed every step of the way. They are truly incredible kids and deserve every moment of this win.”
The effort was funded by fundraisers organized by the team throughout the year. The funds covered their regional competition season, choreography, music and costuming for both routines.
Recognizing their incredible achievements, the Brighton Pom Pon program received a nomination for the Brighton Area Women’s History Roll of Honor and were acknowledged for “Outstanding Historical Accomplishments by Young Women”.
Not only are these young women exceptional athletes, but they are also honor students. Coach Gessler said “Nationals every year normally falls around exam week at Brighton, and even with a heavier practice schedule, they still manage to remain honor students.”
